I was lying down across the stern, lulled by the gentle swaying of the vessel, inhaling the smoke of the torch and trying to discern the stars in the depths above.
Al. Papadiamandis
This excerpt from Alexandros Papadiamantis's novel “The Rose-tinted Shores” sums up the aesthetic experience of the album “The Depths Above”.
Ko Ishikawa, Nikos Sidirokastritis, Giorgos Varoutas, Harris Lambrakis and Anna Linardou interpret the ecstasy of nature, wandering between ancient memory and imagination.
Ancient instruments, such as the Japanese shō and the Middle Eastern ney, a piece of acacia wood and a voice, combined with electroacoustic guitar, electronic sound and live sampling, reflect a poetic contemplation of the human condition between the sea and the depths of the sky.
The album was recorded in Athens on January 17, 2019, at the Underflow Record Store and Art Gallery, which was arranged accordingly for the project's audio and video recording needs.
The realease includes 2 CDs: the first is the recording of the quintet Ishikawa-Sidirokastritis-Varoutas-Lambrakis-Linardou, and the second the recording of the trio Ishikawa-Sidirokastritis-Varoutas. The interior of the 6 panel digipak is decorated with engravings by Dimitris Sidirokastritis.

To άλμπουμ ηχογραφήθηκε στην Αθήνα στις 17 Ιανουαρίου 2019 στον χώρο του Underflow Record Store and Art Gallery, ο οποίος διαμορφώθηκε ειδικά για τις ανάγκες της ηχογράφησης και βιντεοσκόπησης του project.

Underflow is more than just a record store or art gallery. We wanted
to create a place where people can find
out about music they have
never known, or about bands and musicians from places that they have
never heard of, or, to put it simply, a place where music is still
relevant and important!...more

This record has such a magical flow to it, it seems to capture so directly the ups and downs of life, the joy of music and dance, and it's just so damn catchy and fun to listen to as well. Giles

Mary Halvorson is a genius composer and guitarist who has developed her own musical language, and with Code Girl she has incorporated poetry into that language. Incredible compositions and lyricism (each track is a different kind of poem). Halvorson's playing is as great as usual, and all the other members of the band sound great. Robert Wyatt's singing in particular works extremely well in the tracks he's featured. Highly, highly recommend. rat

We've waited a long time for Thee Holy Strangers' second album! But yes, it was worth the wait, the band delivered a sophomore made of gold. Rocky, dusty gold, mind you, crude yet pure and beautiful! This is an indie-rock anthem with the distinguish americana style that the band established from the debut. It seems to have a conceptual flow and works really like a time-stopping spell. Great job, it's such a pleasure to hear THS music once again! BoneWalker
The 17 mindbending songs on this compilation represent minimalist experimental music at its best, a collage of blips and static. Bandcamp New & Notable Dec 3, 2022
